Title: Smart Electronic Olfaction for Body Odor Diagnostics (SMELLODI)

Short description: As part of this project funded by the European Innovation Center's Pathfinder Open program, we are investigating the composition and perception of body odors. Body odors play a subtle but crucial role in many social situations. They influence our attraction to our partner, create a sense of togetherness in the family and allow us to draw conclusions about the feelings or illnesses of our fellow human beings. This is because body odor is influenced by genetic connections, hormonal changes, current inflammatory processes and nutrition, among other things. As the apocrine sweat glands are sensitive to adrenaline, physiological and emotional arousal also alter body odor. We want to develop a matrix that captures how people describe body odors from different settings (during exercise, colds, different diets, etc.). In this way, our research contributes to the overall goal of the project to digitize the sense of smell and make it usable for health applications, e.g. for patients with an olfactory disorder.
